1. Bud To
Launch a Stout - Scary But 'True'
Anheuser-Busch
is reported to be developing a new stout beer carrying the brand
name "Bare Knuckle."
"That would
be a shot across the bow of Diageo," the rival international
company that markets Guinness Stout, said Harry Schuhmacher, editor
of BeerNet Communications, a trade newsletter that publishes the
Beer Business Daily.
London-based
Diageo also is the world's largest producer of alcoholic beverages
with brands such as Johnnie Walker scotch, Tanqueray gin and Smirnoff
vodka in its portfolio.
Advertising
Age, a trade publication that follows the media market, said Rodgers
Townsend was developing the advertising for the new Anheuser-Busch
brew, which would compete against Guinness both in price and packaging.
Chris Growe,
an analyst with A.G. Edwards & Sons who follows Anheuser-Busch,
said he was not aware of any details on Bare Knuckles, but added,
"Typically these specialty brands are not big revenue contributors
to the company. But if it's poised to go against Guinness with a
full marketing program it could be a bigger revenue component."
While Anheuser-Busch
holds nearly half of the U.S. beer market, it has a much smaller
share of the international beer business, according to beer industry
data. Slightly more than 20 percent of the St. Louis company's beer
volume comes from its overseas business, compared to about 80 percent
for Heineken of Netherlands and Diageo's Guinness, according to
Beverage Marketing Corp. in New York.
Anheuser-Busch
registered five trademarks on Oct. 9 that included "Bare Knuckle,"
"Bare Knuckle Light," and "Bare Knuckle Draft,"
according to information at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Web Site.

2. Small
Brewers Call on Government to Support Diversity
Ireland small
breweries are calling on the Minister for Finance to introduce a
new staggered excise system, which will help to support small local
breweries and transform the Irish drink culture from one associated
with the session drinking of big brand beers to a more continential
type model, which nurtures greater diversity and a greater appreciation
of quality speciality beers and beer as an a ccompaniment to food.
The brewers
and Malsters Guild of Ireland, which represents Ireland's 11 small
breweries is calling on the Government to introduce a staggered
excise system, similar to that operated in the most other EU countries.
Speaking on behalf of the Guild members, Eamon O'Hara from Carlow
Brewing Company, explained that, "the excise regime in Ireland
is radically different to most other European countries, where a
lower excise rate is applied to small breweries (microbreweries)
in order to stimulate new market entrants and to support indigenous
brewing industries".
"Ireland
is one of the only EU countries that does not make such provision",
he said. The British Government recently (April 2002) introduced
a 50% reduction in excise payable by smaller breweries for the first
5000 hectolitres of production (and a sliding scale above 5000 hectolitres).
Indeed European law provides for reduced rates of beer duty for
independent small breweries under Article 4 of Council Directive
92/83/EEC.
Because of the
scale of production and the labour intensive nature of the work,
it is impossible for small breweries to achieve anywhere near the
low unit costs of the large breweries (without compromising the
quality and distinctiveness of our products). And, because beer
is already priced quite highly in the Irish market the selling price
cannot be increased to reflect the speciality nature of the products.
Selling prices
are at this high level in Ireland due to the high excise rates.
Therefore, the small breweries are forced to operate off very low
margins, which make it impossible to incentivise distributors and
retailers and are inadequate for speciality drinks companies if
they are to be sustainable in the longer term.
As a direct
result of the current situation, all of the small Irish breweries
in Ireland have become heavily dependent on export sales for survival.
In most cases export sales account for between 80% and 90% of turnover.
While this has offered a lifeline to the industry it is clear that
this is not sustainable in the longer term. Firstly, because the
small Irish breweries must compete with other small breweries in
export markets, particularly the UK, who now benefit from lower
excise rates in their own markets and are therefore financially
stronger (have more money to invest in marketing, etc..), and secondly,
because the success of Irish beer in export markets is influenced
greatly by the profile of the products in the domestic market, which
in the case of the small breweries is currently negligible.
The Brewers
and Malsters Guild believe that given the chance, a strong small
brewing sector can play an important role in transforming the culture
of binge drinking, which has now reached epidemic proportions in
Ireland.
"We genuinely
believe that if there is greater availability of local speciality
beers, consumers will be better educated and will develop a greater
appreciation of beer. Over time this will undoubtedly change peoples
perceptions of beer and drinking. It doesn't just have to be about
getting drunk. Good beer is something to be savoured and enjoyed
in itself, or as a very good accompaniment to food" he said.
There are currently
11 microbreweries in Ireland, all of which were established in the
mid to late '90's. Of these, four operate as pub breweries and brew
predominantly for consumption on their own premises. A further five,
which includes Carlow Brewing Company, Dublin Brewing Company, Celtic
Brewing Company (Enfield), Kinsale Brewing Company and Biddy Early's
Brewery (Co. Clare) are actively marketing and distributing their
products in Ireland and abroad. Between them, these five breweries
produce 14 branded beers and one cider. The beers styles include
five ales, four stouts, three lagers and two wheat beers.
