Drinkers Earn More Than Teetotalers

A new study in England has discovered that those who enjoy an occasional alcoholic drink make more money than teetotalers. The research at Stirling University found that drinkers earn an average of almost £2,000 a year than those who don't drink. The study, based on regular surveys of 17,000 people who were born in Britain in 1958, suggests that socializing with workmates leads to promotions and pay raises. "The survey shows you don't want to be a teetotaller if you want to get on in your job. People who drink moderately seem to earn more," said Professor David Bell, the study's author. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-001997.php

'Kinder Garten' For Reluctant Male Shoppers

German women can now leave their partners at a special kindergarten formen, offering beer and entertainment, while they go shopping. "The women are issued a receipt for their partners when they hand them in and can pick them up again when they return it to us later," Alexander Stein, manager of the Nox Bar in Hamburg said. The men are given a name badge on arrival and for 10 euros ($11.80) they get two beers, a hot meal, televised soccer and games. Stein said the idea for the Saturday afternoon "Maennergarten" came from a female customer who thought it would be a good way of getting away from her husband so she could shop in peace.

Anti-Aging Beer

A Japanese scientist has developed a beer that he claims acts as a facial treatment. Yes, you drink it and, no, you don't rub it on. "I wanted our beer to not only taste good, but to have some health benefits," said Sho Shind, who developed the beer. "Local brands of beer can't survive in the competitive market unless they have some unique features." Shindo, chief scientist at the Akita Research Institute of Food and Brewing, in cooperation with three breweries in AkitaPrefecture, developed the a beer rich in hop polyphenol, which is said to repress activities of an enzyme that causes wrinkles and slack skin. Polyphenol is the health-promoting ingredient found in red wine. The beer was released in July.

Beer Belly Myth

Research by the University of London indicates that the beer belly is misnamed, because that distinctive bulge isn't caused by beer. Further, the study found that women who drink beer tend to weigh less. A research team led by Martin Bobak used data based in the Czech Republic, which boasts the highest per capita beer consumption in the world. The data included 891 men and 1,098 women aged 25-64 who were either non-drinkers or drank exclusively beer and compared their body mass index (a measure of overweight) and waist-hip ratio, which measures beer belly. The researchers found that when corrected for factors such as smoking, there was no significant link between beer drinking and a beer belly - and women who drank beer tended to weigh less, rather than more, than those who did not. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002041.php

Women Immune to Beer Goggle Effect Shocker

A new study indicates that "beer goggles" may not work the same way for women as men. Research at the University of Vienna confirmed that the more men drink the more likely they are to find a woman attractive, but found the reverse is true for women. This contradicts work by scientists in Scotland that indicates there is no difference in the beer goggles effect between men and women. The study took both male and female volunteers and asked them to grade pictures of the opposite sex from good-looking to ugly while sober. Different volunteers were then given varying amounts of alcohol and asked to perform the same task. Drunken women consistently gave pictures of men lower ratings than women who were sober. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002041.php
