Willkommen to Part 1 of our 2 Part Oktoberfest Special Edition.
O K T O B
E R F E S T F A K T E N
1. The Munich
Oktoberfest, also called "Wiesn" in german, takes place
on the 'Theresienwiese', two kilometers away from das Hauptbahnhof.
So, 'Wie komme ich am besten zum Hauptbahnhof?' will be a fairly
limited chat-up line.
2. This year
is the 169th Oktoberfest since 1810, when Bavaria's King Ludwig
and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen got married. The "Theresienwiese"
above means 'Theresa's green' in hounour of the bride.
Some Oktoberfest
Figures:
- Six million
liters of beer consumed. Liter from 6.30 Euro to 6.80 Euro.
- 30,000 liters
of wine lowered.
- 600,000 broiled
chickens munched.
- 6 million
visitors wobbled.
- 200,000 pairs
of pork sausages tucked into.
- 42 hectars
(over 50 football fields!) of lost people
4. The official
prelude to the opening of the Oktoberfest is the parade of the Landlords
and Breweries on Saturday. About 1000 participants are involved,
including the landlords' families in decorated carriages, the magnificent
horse-drawn drays of the Munich breweries, waitresses on decorated
floats and all the beer tent bands.
5. At the foot
of the Bavaria statue, the huge Oktoberfest grounds also provide
carousels, roller coasters and all the fun of the fair.
6. Our friends
at The Dublin Brewing Company have assembled a team of crack beer
commandos who will be attending this year. Part 2 of this edition
will feature various photos and some recollections from this year's
event.

Scientists in
Scotland have found that men and women who have consumed a moderate
amount of alcohol find the faces of the opposite sex 25% more attractive
than their sober counterparts. The study revealed that there was
no difference in the beer goggles effect between men and women.
Students at
Glasgow University were shown color photographs of 120 male and
female St. Andrews University students aged 18 to 26. Participants
were asked to rate their aesthetic properties. Half of the students
had drunk up to four units of alcohol, equivalent to two pints of
beer or two-and-a-half glasses of wine. The 40 who had been drinking
rated the people in the photographs as broadly more attractive than
those not drinking.

None of the
pamphlets we have received on the Nice re-referendum have examined
the impact for the beer lovers' agenda. Why not? The German government
is already out of the blocks ready to fight any efforts by the European
Union to up the cost of beer.
European Internal
Market Commissioner, Frits Bolkestein wants to equalize taxes on
beer and wine across the 15-member bloc. By "harmonizing"
prices, the EU hopes to reduce smuggling and fraud. In Germany,
the proposal would involve raising the beer tax by an estimated
30 euro cents ($0.29) on each case. It would also mean introducing
a duty on wine, which is currently not imposed in Germany. "There
will be no increase in beer tax with us," said a spokesman
for Finance Minister Hans Eichel.
Could the harmonisation
of taxes on jar see a reduction in prices in Ireland? Perhaps this
is the question you should be asking anybody canvassing at your
door.

Production of
Budvar Budweiser has resumed after the brewery quit brewing for
a few days because the recent floods within much of the Czech Republic.
Budejovicky Budvar shut down operations for a few days last month
when large parts of the town of Ceske Budejovice, 90 miles south
of Prague, were flooded, officials said. Although part of the brewery
was flooded, it escaped significant damage. Phew!!
